A before and an after

Time flies, It's said that when you're happier the time faster passes. In one way or another we are here, in the month of December, returning to say goodbye, returning to start from scratch, well ... from scratch, but this time at home and with a year of batteries charged.
It is not easy to make a summary of this year, I don't know exactly where to start. The first thing is to thank the support of the people who have been at my side this year. It has been a pleasure know you or to continue sharing my life with you.

But far from being wimpish I would recommend this experience to any of you who are reading this.

A unique opportunity to get out of our comfort zone, to know a different culture that the wack of your habits will help you to know better yourself. I know that It's not all peaches and cream. It is a complex experience and depends heavily on the environment and the people you meet in your destination.
I have to thank my colleagues and my English teacher who opened their homes, their lives and customs to get to know Czech Republic from within. Also it was a pleasure to meet and share trips with my fellow volunteers, when you find yourself in a new situation, away from your people, thanks in large measure to know more people who are living through similar experiences to yours, to be able to contrast them.

Today I am spending my last day in Český Těšín, small town in where I rode looking for corners during this entire year, I can say that summer is the time more grateful, without hesitation, and the winter with snow is also very cool. Tomorrow I have a long day of travel and waiting in airports, but I have Les Miserables to read. Before leaving and thanks to my guardian angel I have been fortunate enough to enjoy for the last time of all my favorite things and habits that I have happy during this year.
Yesterday I bought my last pomazanka, my last bread with onion, my last Radegast beer, etc. In the end of the experience I'm proud of having completed, and I'm extremely keen to return home, to begin again.
Thank you for everything, I leave the command of the boat to my great friend Blanca :)

Christmas are coming

The time passes and December has arrived, I am a few days to end my adventure, but ... I'll leave that for the next article, we want today to focus on how people live in Czech Republic the Christmas. It is one of the few festivities related to the religion that has this country, but the truth is that few here understood as well or even are not even aware that many customs have to do with religious stuffs.
In this way in the Czech Republic is very typical decorating the house with the crowns of Advent that give good luck and prosperity to the family.

This is a piece of wood or twigs in which are placed four candles, one for each Sunday before Christmas. But as I have said, it is a habit, currently a fashion, that many Czechs do not even know their relationship with the religion.

During this month is very typical throughout the country celebrate Sant Barbara (in my region patron saint of miners) a habit quite macho or outdated, in that single women cut sprigs of lilac or or cherry to marry the following year. Also in almost all the cities are often mounted the Christmas markets.
We spent the saturday watching the flea market of Ostrava where drank Medovina and eggnog for coping with the cold and we were surprised with a nativity scene make it with Palma with the magic Kings and all, which surprised us because they do not celebrate this tradition. We could also see donkeys, a llama and a camel.
Another important festival is the that replaces what in El Bierzo we know by the magician chalupa. We are talking about Saint Nicolas, a saint who arrives with a book of sins under the arm and accompanied by an angel and a demon. The devil will give them to children who have behaved badly coal but with the good intermediation of the angel and the promise to behave well the small, Saint Nicolas le giveaway a piece of fruit or a sweet. This will be all the years, the night of the five in December.

New Střep's Opening

On Tuesday November 11 of 2014 was a special day, not only by being Sant Martin (Svatý Martin in Czech), date indicated in Czech Republic as os we have in the entry currently in Střep, also by which we celebrated by everything high already in the new center. With five different activities and visit St. Martin in his horse.

Tickets were sold that included their route, the lanterns, the five games and some very special gifts, the story of Sant Martin and a few small ceramics horses which very patient and meticulously prepared our colleague Blanka.
The program development as well as the Monday 10 was made in Petrovice do Karvina, where is located the head office of Os Ave, the association responsible for Střep. But on this first occasion also served a tasting of typical dish at this date, roast goose accompanied with beet and knedlik, so tasty!

For wednesday's program, We were already using the new center in its entirely, we started with the rotations.
The first meeting was with a group of children from the school, who arrived with their teacher to play with the traditional wooden games that rented AVE, decorate candleholders and have fun with two team games.

That afternoon, already with "our children" as Blanca and me like to say, we did rotations with traditional games, group games, the candleholders and our workshop of leather in which we made coin purses with form of sweet box, is a very simple activity and they love it.
We were looking for something fast because the rotations were 30 few minutes away and easy to explain with our Czech level "silence, easy, give me that and stand here" we also could not allow to make something much more complicated.

This is just to cut a circle of leather, make holes in the edge and going through a strip of leather by them, closes and hop! Now you have your coin purses.

The second day of opening the rotations were slightly different, with the children of the school we did balloon art, aircraft and dogs exactly, in addition to the hat that all were post.
Instead of decorating the porta candles, decorated cookies cinnamon, are very typical in Czech Republic for the holidays, especially for Easter as you can see in this article. In this case the cookies had the shape of the logo of AVE, a hat, decorate the cookies with a mixture of sugar and coloring.

After the balloon art, our rotation for the afternoon was a workshop with wire, where they could make key-rings and necklaces in the form of a spiral. Again easy to explain and a finer details that could not be carried home, many of them still put on it.

To complete this very special week, on Friday we had a great percussion workshop with a polish professional drummer. A workshop was really interesting. We were able to learn about many types of percussion instruments and learn some basic rhythms.

News in Střep

In Střep we are in luck, the good news and plans are in ON mode!
Today we are a holiday in Czech Republic and Slovakia, on 28 October 1918 proclaimed the independence of Czechoslovakia of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the Wenceslas Square in Prague.

Can be summarized into three major reasons this independence, the World War I, the centralization of the Austro-hungarian empire that would lose national rights to Czechoslovakia and finally the german attacks that threatened to exterminate the Czech language.

Children are on vacation from autumn until Thursday, which means that we have summer hours Wednesday morning 29 as we had yesterday Monday 27 of 2014.
For Thursday we have the next meeting of leather! After the bracelets and purses, in two days we will do our wallets.
But not only that, we also have pumpkins in drain and much to decorate because this Friday October 31 of 2014, there are Halloween party IN STřEP!

But as well it has just the month, the best we expected in November. On 11 November 2014 Střep changes the center and what better opportunity for the opening that the week is celebrated Saint Martin.

The history of Saint Martin is held in the Czech Republic as well as in many countries in northern Europe, it is said that arrives with its white horse (although not the Santiago) to welcome the winter and snow. It also marks the end of the grape harvest festival celebrating the day with young wineknedlyki and goose to the oven.

Taking advantage of the date, Saint Martin will be a long walk through the streets of our neighborhood, Svibice to guide us all from Střep to our new Střep, modern and with large windows where we have various games, activities and workshops.

100% Recommended, i invite you to enjoy it with us

Saturday in Ostrava

Ostrava
The truth is that it's a pleasure to have young mentors and related in tastes or, at least, in topics of conversation. We've had a lot of luck and Cristina accompanied us to Ostrava. is the large city that we still have more to hand Český Těšín, are only forty minutes by train and the price are about 100 crowns roundtrip. Here the train trips depart economically very profitable, and more if we compare it to Spain, it's very comfortable traveling too, but if it is true that at times due to some fault, about ten minutes as much but if you have links don't worry, the next you will wait in the station, you'll have to go fast but you will wait.
Once in Ostrava, the truth is that it was very nice day, sunny and with a temperature not too low, we walked a bit in the center, which looks very tipical Czech, buildings very beautiful but also very old.
This city maintains its tram, as in many other Czech cities, which is very comodomoverse by the city, i loved it :) The first thing we did was go to eat very close to the party area to those hours with the closed premises clear. We were able to enjoy some crepes in a french restaurant a bit hidden and charming, Cristina also spoke to us of a very nice chinese restaurant in the city.

After lunch, we put in place in the direction of the CEZ Arena Ostrava, the stadium where the party was being held of HC Vítkovice Steel against Kometa Brno, we went on the tram (in this tour we had the opportunity to go ahead of the factory where a festival is held very interesting music in July, we'll talk about later) and it was crazy the amount of people there, since then in Czech Republic the people understand the Hockey as in Spain we understand football.

The entry I thought it was very cheap, only 150 crowns, It is 5.49 €. I leave a video below where you will be able to enjoy the incredible atmosphere that we live in the stadium.
After the game we stopped at the shopping center, Nova Karolina, a shopping center like any other (I have a special hatred for this type of sites, are the sons of consumerism) but i would like to highlight a huge tent of instruments of music, I was head over heels in love with, we all have our weaknesses, I guess.
We are also catching was very funny and the fact that they have a gym with a glass wall toward the huge area of restaurants, eat a burger or some spring rolls seeing people make sport seems to me so strange as to make sport watching people eating fast food.

At the end of the day we went to "Stodolní", the street of pubs of the city, there are a wide variety but decided to enter in an Irish pub: Dublin Pub.
It was amazing for me, the first time that I went to a local equal to any in Spain, it was like staying a little closer to home, had mojitos, gin and tonics and cuba libre, what more can one ask for! :) Yes!
Two by one of seven to nine in the evening, we come back again to check the time difference, in Spain the happy hour, in the singular, it would be twelve to a more or less.

In conclusion a great day, great fun, thanks friends! :)

¡Chao Zadov! ¡Ahoj Leather workshop!

The summer ends in Český Těšín and not only the hours of light are changing, also the time, the habits or the timetables. Unfortunately, among other things, this implies that we must say goodbye to the Zadov, the expression that we got more similar to say in Czech tracking.

It all started during the camp in Chata Hradec, where I organized for children a trace in the mountain. We found a perfect area for a nice picnic next to the cottage and decided to finish it there and make a short evaluation.
They are two groups between 9 and 14 years old and to make us the first tour we could not enjoy the activity together with them, but seeing them run excited and happy to reach the goal it was well!

As a result of that experience I don't hesitate to start a weekly activity where they can carry out urban traces, small gymkhanas, sets of tracks and follow your map. The day to day was more complicated since the groups were much smaller, and the age difference bigger.

But in all ways for three and a half months of Střep children had the opportunity to play on a team, learn signs and guidance on the map and laugh with different types of games.
The tests were never very extensive as there were an average of eight or ten and for two hours of activity could not lengthen them much. The face is painted, have learned to make figures of tangram, origami, collages,... a little bit of everything.

Personally I find the games with the tracks, you can that because more influx these days and see their motivation to find each track, knowing key locations in their neighborhood, looking for books in the library or tracks in the post office. But any day was equal and they looked forward with anticipation.
But as I said the good weather is running out, and it comes time to indoor activities, so we will do our own wallets, bracelets, necklaces, etc....

!Start the leather workshop¡
In October of 2014, every Thursdays to 15:00 to 17:00
We are waiting for you in Střep! :)

8 things to do in Czech Republic

After almost nine months wandering the streets of this country I think I'm sufficiently trained to give you some tips. It doesn't matter if you come to visit, for a season or to live, I wanted to join in an article a little bit of everything, both habits, touristic visits as unavoidable things. I hope you like the reading as I liked write it.

1. To visit  Prague

The capital of the country and without doubt, Prague is a jewel, a city that still culture and history to equal parts, which follows interculturality by their pores, very large and at the same time It's very small, the great little Prague, day dazzles but at night it shines even with more force. A perfect city for a summer festival or a White Christmas, without a doubt, one of the best destinations in the Czech Republic.
2. Bicycle Routes and hiking

In this country, the sport has much presence, so it doesn't matter the moment of the year in which you travel to the Czech Republic, you will always have some sports plan. The more usual for the months of the year the weather permitting are the bike routes,  long roads and short trails for sundays. In the article 8 differences between Czech Republic and Spain I spoke on different links to the transport by the country that It will be so useful to know these routes.

3. Ski

If we are in the middle of winter is the best plan to go skiing or snowboarding. For this option I'd recommend that the cordillera Krkonoše which houses crowd of c (Chata) and the ski resort considered permanently as the best in the country: Špindlerův mlýn, but if you convention hall in Prague without much time to get around, you rely on the Šumava station in en Šumava Špičák, complex toward where a bus leaves from Prague on Saturday.
4. To visit Český Krumlov

If there is a charming city in Czech Republic, this is Český Krumlov, it is a small city, which is part of the UNESCO world heritage site, and that grows disorderly around the precious meanders which makes the Moldava river. A medieval city alleyways and secret corners, a monumental and cultural city. I gave to you a more personal view of the city at the entrance of visit to Český Krumlov, trip during my on-arrival training.
Finally, whenever you have time, visit Rožemberk, a small village where is the castle of the same name that refers to the lords of Rožemberk that made of Český Krumlov your city of residence.
5. Thermal bath in Karlovy Vary

We are talking about a beach resort town located in the region of Bohemia, the largest in the country where is Prague, famous for its glass. The name of the city is given by its founder Charles IV. The city counts with thirteen major hot springs and hundreds more smaller and relevance but equally healthy. As is typical in Czech Republic, has its own style to make the Czech  liquor Becherovka by excellence called inseparably.
To stand out in this beautiful city, is held here annually in the month of July, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, one of the oldest in the world.
6. Travel in Moravia

If you're more than road and blanket, I recommend the southeast of the country, in the area of Moravia, you can travel from the brewery to the wine factory, see monuments of the UNESCO as the palace and gardens of Kroměříž, the baroque column of the plague in Olomouc or functionalist villa Tugendhat in Brno. You will not be disappointed, it is also an area where there are many traditional events and where you can learn more about the czech musical and gastronomic culture, recommended the regions of Slovácko y Valaquia.
Finally, I recommend a visit of the city as is the ancient empire of the Bata shoe company, the city of Zlin and visit a free air to the Karst of Moravia with more than thousand caves and the Macocha ravine.

7. Try all czech beers that you can.

If something is famous Czech Republic is to be the country of beer, not only have lots of variety but the type of beer is completely different than the rest of countries, very slight to the stomach at the same time that a pleasure for the palate.
If there is a city which is known for it beer is Plzen (Pilsen), but you don't confuse the advertising, each region, small towns or even restaurants that dot the routes of cyclists make their own beer giving rise to a multitude of different flavors and one of the best habits to the remembrance is collect coasters.

Personally I recommend Radegast (beer in the area of Ostrava), beer of Konicek, Staropramen, Svijany, certanly Budweiser and Kozel. Even if you're very friky of beer and its properties you can take baths in it in various places, which I know is in the region of the Beskydy Mountains, the SPA of  Štramberk beer.
8. Study in Brno

If once you've visited the country you've fallen in love, as becomes very regularly and you are young you can opt for one of the best reasons for the move to the Czech Republic, studying in Brno! University City and excellence, where young people come together for Erasmus and other international projects, such as the European Voluntary Service, you will not be disappointed in ambience, influx of people and a very good views of the city from its Špilberk Castle.
City very centrally located within the country and incredibly well connected for travel, both domestically and abroad, will not leave you indifferent. It does not have to the best the monumental importance than Prague, nor of course its size, but if a special charm, Brno is breathed life.

Walking for Cieszyn

In April I did an article about Český Těšín where we spoke about Cieszyn, the polish part of the city, in this entry I would like to explain something more about this part of my new city (although now It will be my city only for three more months). As I said to you, Cieszyn is a really turistic city, it is confortable to walk, to do shopping and to visit museums, whereas Český Těšín is more industrial city, dormitory city.

Always that I have time I ride my bicycle and I visit the polish part, I need to change only crowns by zlotys (6.55kc is equal 1zl and 4zl is 1€) and I go to shopping or ride in the park or I have a tea in LAJA organization where there are more European Volunteers who organize differents workshops. I was in a feet massage workshop and It was such a great one, I learned a lot.

I like also ride in Venecja Street because in the end you can found such great bar called Bar Cieszyńska Wenecja. It is so nice!

Through the narrow streets of Cieszyn you can see elegant restaurants, grafities or relics as Studna Tří Bratří (the three brothers' well), the well is "hidden" among the narrow streets of the city and represents the meeting point of three royal brothers that said founded the city.
As in many wells and ancient sources tourists can shed their currencies to the well to get to see met any of their wishes. It is a city where Protestantism is very present, many people working for the church, gives speeches or works with children through the protestant church.
In the town hall square there are plenty of restaurants and movement of people, which is appreciated living in the industrial and quieter part of the city.

On saturdays also there are markets in the streets, there is fresh food one in the old quarter and another near bus station where you can found clothes, flowers also food, as you can si in the photos. In this market I had the oportunity to try tipical slovak cheese, in the grill and served with one kind of jam, called Oštiepok.
In the first photo you can see one stand with different instruments to cut and to shape vegetables. Due to in Czech Republic and Poland the people tend to eat a lot of vegetables in salads, they put cabbage, beet, cucumber, parrots, etc. In the stand had different graters, strippers, destroyers of potatoes so confortable, wonderful! :)

In the final analysis, Cieszyn is a city to discover that I recommend to all of you to visit.

¡Welcome Blanca!

After two months of waiting, of doubt, to see different curriculums and my organization raised different people and situations, the search for new European Volunteer finished and the result is: our dear Blanca.

She arrived a nine september with her suitcase under the arm and a lot of fresh ideas and the willingness to work. During his life, has had the opportunity to live in different cities, or from O Porto to Granada passing by Tarragona, to share experiences, learn and play, and with this force reaches Střep, directly from Huelva her hometown.
She is teacher and psicopedagogue and has worked for many years with children, like volunteer as social instructor.

The first day already surprised us with their ability to make outstanding tin and natural soap. Our house back to light, it becomes to hear noise, returns to life!
Blanca leads here a week and already we have had the opportunity to share recipes for food, shopping and cigarettes. Without a doubt, a great companion of experience.

Now she has in front of her an arduous journey of adaptation, at the same time, the schedules, language, way of being czech, etc. We are ather side to make it easier the way. It has a whole year ahead to live Czech Republic, traveling in Europe, learn of their customs and bring her culture to children from Český Těšín and Cieszyn.
I will keep you informed of its projects and activities adn sure will be fun and different.

¡Welcome Blanca!

Visit to Cesky Krumlov

One of the activities of the arrival training was a visit to Český Krumlov, a lovely city, a World Heritage Site since 1992, which does not surprise me. It is amazing how the city conforms to the around of the meanders of the Moldova river, the same that happens after by Rosemberk, the small town with great history where we stayed.

The way to know the city could not be better, since one of the highest view of the city our trainers said to us to make groups, they gave us a map of the city and a few questions, we also had to take a photo of a fridge of a home and then according to the group a photo of the highest part, more low, more beautiful Český Krumlov etc. , in this way and with a very simple activity, the trainers helped us to know the environment and the neighbors.

As for the time, we had two or three until seven in the evening to stroll along its streets and talk to the neighbors and the rest of visitors, is a very touristic city.
We know first hand how they live the Czechs in Český Krumlov, this helped us a lot at the end of the training to get an idea of the way of life, culture and the taboos of this country, as I said in the previous article the methodology used by the trainers I thought it was exceptional.

We were able to visit the castle, which is impressive but we did not pay for the entire visit, by what they told us not well worth it, the only thing the views from the towers. In the pit of the castle there are bears that can be viewed by entering the site, we did not have the luck to see them and I am glad I am not very fond of see confined animals like in a zoo of Ostrava.
As I said to you is a very touristic city which implies many restaurants of all types, souvenir shops and so on, both workers in the local as the neighbors understand and in general will reply you in English without any problem, which is a great help taking into account how difficult it is understood in Czech. We could also see a wax museum, art gallery, at that time with an exhibition of abstract art and the truth, the simple fact of being able to walk through the historic center is enough.

A great visit accompanied by other volunteers, a perfect location to explore the city and get to know each other better! Just prior to leaving we walked into a small grocery store where we bought fruit and wine necessary for a good spanish Sangria, that night was very fun as well, but that is another story... :)))

Plackovy Festival

Last Saturday, 30th of August, 2014 I was in the traditional Festival of Bukovec, we are speaking about the place more east of the Czech Republic, in the moravian-silesian region that account with a Nature Reserve since 1988 with more than 7,000 hectars and where much of its population is of Polish nationality and speaking the dialect of Silesian Cziescyn.
In this beautiful small town, Bukovec, we were able to enjoy a festival, which attracted not only to neighbors of the Czech Republic but also to various neighbors of Poland and Slovakia in addition, at least, a Spanish woman.
The main attraction of this event are the typical pancakes of the country, particularly in this area, It makes of potato and accompanied by cream, bacon, pork rinds, cheese, or even jam. Prepared by experts (handmade) and cooked on a griddle or fried, then the recipe:
Bramborové Placky:

Ingredients:

- 8 potatoes
- 250 grams of flour
- 1 egg
- salt
- breadcrumbs

Elaboration:
Boil the potatoes until they are tender and leave to cool, preferably until the next day. The potatoes, once cold are crushed and beaten down on the counter, add the flour, egg, salt, thicken with breadcrumbs screened and prepare to the earth, such as potato dumplings. We must work quickly so that the dough does not harden.
Once we have the earth doing this add or we put on the iron back and forth and once on the plate are mounted with jam or with cream and bacon cooking, and so on.

But this event, as always in Czech Republic, it is not only to eat, we could also enjoy the beer, enjoy a market with all kinds' stands, from pottery to children's toys and also different concerts.
The best concert without a doubt, I enjoyed most was of Friš, a group that includes traditional between their instruments the cymbal that you can see from the image, a stringed instrument played with a couple of harnesses and whose root is in the Hungarian gypsy culture.

We also enjoyed a tribute to ABBA, Kristina, a pop singer from Slovakia, Yesterdays, a rock group and up to a DJ. Without a doubt the organization managed catch all kinds of musical styles attracting all kinds of audiences, from families to adolescents and young people, a community atmosphere.
